Our response: "why not?!"...
When and where was the Fraternity founded?
Originally founded as Malik Sigma Psi Fraternity on May 13th, 1977 on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in the state of New York (U.S.A.).
Who founded the Fraternity? Fifteen highly motivated young college men known as "The Crowns”. Influenced by the time of enlightenment and heightened social awareness of the 1960's and 70's, our founders recognized the need for a redefinition of themselves and their culture especially to instill a deeper sense of pride in their people's identity.
What does "MALIK" Mean? MALIK is a Swahili/Arabic title, which means King or Ruler. It is also an acronym for the five principles MALIK stands on: Manhood Achievement Leadership Integrity and Knowledge. It's also the religious name of the great apostle of self-determination and liberation of all oppressed people, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, also known as Malcolm X. Our "Shining Black Prince" held a special place in the hearts of the Founders and of the Entire Brotherhood.
Why did the Fraternity remove the Greek letters from its name?
Because it was time. MALIKs understood that it was time that indigenous people stop using Greek/Western labels to define themselves. For many years our name was named Malik Sigma Psi fraternity. The Greek letters: "Sigma" and "Psi" were chosen to mimic the other college Greek fraternities and sororities and to "ease acceptance into the college fraternal world". However, as the years passed on, MALIKs' consciousness grew and it was time for change and for the truth to be told. What truth? The truth that the origin of today's western secret societies originated in northeast Africa (Egypt). Brothers also understood that MALIKs are constantly working to better themselves and their communities - this also extends to our consciousness. The name change is a bold statement that Black/Latino - and all Indigenous people of the world, must start to accurately and boldly define themselves and not be defined by others i.e. via through Greek lettering/symbolism. MALIKs are change agents, not conformers. MALIKs must lead the way, not follow an outdated and intellectually self-hating Greek-lettered template/paradigm.
When did the Fraternity change its name?
On May 18th, the fraternity held a democratic vote at its 2002 National Convention where the name change was voted upon and passed by a majority vote.
Are MALIKs ashamed of their "semi-Greek" past?
Although the Fraternity outgrew the two Greek letters in our name, we still and will always honor Malik Sigma Psi. We are just as proud of our past, as we are of our present - for without Malik Sigma Psi, there would be no MALIK Fraternity. It was and is an evolution of consciousness. Similar to that of Malcolm X changing his name to Malik Shabazz (Please view the Name Change section for further detailed explanation).
